Scholarships 2009-2010          Scholarship                   Criteria           Deadline American Legion Americanism Scholarship A $500 scholarship available to a Berkshire County high school senior planning to attend college in the fall. An essay  on "WHAT VETERANS' DAY MEANS TO ME" and a biography of the applicant are required.           Feb. 5, 2010 Girl's Inc. of the Berkshires Scholarship This year eight $1000 scholarships will be awarded. All are need based and income eligibility is required. Essay required    4 scholarships are underwritten by Ruth & Nicholas Boraski 1 is sponsored by The Zonta Club of Berkshire County 1 is sponsored by the BCC Foundation 1 is sponsored by MCLA 1 is sponsored by Westfield State College Graduating female seniors must have a GPA of 2.80, must have demonstrated extraordinary initiative, energy, and creativity in community service (with particular emphasis on service to disadvantaged members of the Berkshire community) or the application will not be considered. Applicnts for the BCCF, MCLA and WSC scholarships must indicate they are attending the respective college to receive the scholarship.                                 Mar 5, 2010 National CO-OP Scholarship Program The scholarship is open to high school seniors planning to attend one of the following schools: Drexel University, Johnson & Wales University, Kettering University, Pace University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Cincinnati, University of Toledo and Wentworth Institute of Technology. National CO-OP Scholarship Program will award merit scholarships totaling $4.2,000,000. The National Commission encourages minority and female students as well as students interested in science, mathematics, engineering and technology to apply for this merit co-op scholarship. Students must have high school GPA of 3.5 or better and include a typed one-page essay (500 words or less) describing why you have chosen to pursue a college cooperative education program. The scholarship and essay can be submitted on line at www.co-op.edu or mailed to National Commission for Cooperative Education, 350 Huntington Ave., 384 CP Boston, MA. 02115-5096. No transcripts or recommendations are required.           Feb. 5, 2010 Father Robert F. Wagner Memorial Scholarship Two $1000 scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors who are residents of Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin or Berkshire County. Students must demonstrate either an intention to pursue a degree and a career dedicated to serving persons with disabilities, or be a person with a disability seeking to further his or her education.           Mar. 18, 2010 Berkshire Association for Paralegals & Legal secretaries Seniors who pursing a degree in a legal related field (i.e. lawyer, paralegal, legal secretary: political science, criminal justice, etc)                 Mar 1, 2010 Pittsfield Lodge of Elks #272 Any senior planning to continue their education who demonstrates the highest standard of leadership in his/her senior class. Must submit a written resume pf his/her activities in high school as well as community service. It must be a min. of 500 words and must be accompanied by a least two letters of recommendation.                Feb. 22, 2010 Valley Press Club Senior planning a career in journalism. A copy of student's Financial Aid Form including tax rerturn income of parents. Letter of recommendation. Need to include no more than 5 examples of work.              Mar. 18, 2010 Dr. Seuss's OH, the Places You Go! College Scholarship You must be high school senior, submit an essay of 500 words, double-spaced on thinking about the book Oh, The Places You"ll Go!, what kinds of opportunities and challenges do you think your education will present in the future? One scholarship award of $5,000 is being awarded.                                       Feb. 15, 2010                    Rebekah Assembly of Massachusetts A scholarship of $500.00 to qualified seniors The following information must accompany the application: 1. Statement of needs of a scholarship (include family      circumstances) 2.  One (1) adult personal letter of reference from outside of      school. 3.  Two (2) educational letters of reference. 4.  Academic/scholastic record 5.  Personal statement explaining your goals, financial status,     members of your family, etc.               March 1, 2010 Order Sons of Italy Grand Lodge of  Mass. Scholarship Scholarships available to students attending a 4-year college (including vocational and/or technical. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of scholastic ability, character and activities. Some of the scholarships are reserved for the children and grandchildren of the Lodge, and some will be warded to students without affiliation. All students are encouraged to apply.            March 1, 2010 SAMMY 2010 Scholarship This is the 13th annual "Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Award." High school seniors with a GPA of 3.20 or higher and who participates in a high school sport or club sport during the 2009-2010 school year. Applicants will be required to write an essay of no more than 250 words about  "How Milk has helped in My academics and/or Athletics." 25 students will receive a $7500 scholarship. For more information visit body by milk.com               Feb. 22, 2010 Greylock Federal Credit Union Scholarship $500 scholarship to each high school in Berkshire county. Must be a member of the Credit Union. Applicants for this scholarship must describe in a short essay (500) how they demonstrate positive community spirit, respect and concern for others, volunteerism, and simply, how they "Treat Everyone Better Than They expect."              Apr. 1, 2010 Steven Phillips Memorial Scholarship Scholarships ranging from $3000 to $10,000 yearly, the award is renewable for up to 4 years. Applicants should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, be enrolled in a demanding course of study and  demonstrate skilled writing ability. Students should have substantial financial need. Information and application can be found on the web-site at www.phillips-scholarship.org             Apr. 12, 2010 Jewish Federation of the Berkshires The Henry Simkin and Frances Simkin Schiller and Dr. Stanley and Faye Simkin Scholarship Fund- to be awarded to a graduating senior who has demonstrated leadership in the jesish community. Fischer Memorial The Ann S. Fischer Memorial  Scholarship was endowed by friends, family, and fellow members of the Pittsfield Federation of Educational Secretaries. Anne was a former secretary in the Pittsfield Public Schools for 39 years, serving as secretary to six Superintendents.Applicants must be a current senior attending Pittsfield or Taconic High School, planning to enter a two or four-year college or technical school in the fall and majoring in Legal/Para Legal, Secretarial, or Business fields. Attach a copy of transcript and activity sheet.                Mar. 26, 2010 IEEE High School Science Writing Contest IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). The contest is conducted annually to encourage high school students to develop an interest or pursue a career in engineering and science.Two prize divisions will be established: grades 9-10 and gades 11-12. The instructions for the contest have been revised into a "substance" page, which provides guidance to the students for the research and composition of their papers, and a "mechanics" page, which summarizes the requirements for preparing and submitting the papers. These instructions, along with the "Cover Page" and "Awards" forms may be accessed on the IEEE website: www.ieee.org/berkshire "Contests."          Feb. 12, 2010 Berkshire Bank Foundation 2010 Scholarship Six  $2,000 scholarships are available in Berkshire County for  seniors attending any high school in Berkshire County. Applicants must have been involved in volunteer activities in the community, involvement in extracurricular school activities and financial need and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Essay also included in the application. Only 5 applications will be accepted from each high school, so check with your Guidance Dept. to determine if you should apply.          Mar. 17, 2010 Best Buy Scholarship Program This year Best Buy Scholarship Program will award 1,000 scholarships of $1,000 each to high school seniors  planning to attend a  two or four year college. Scholarships will be based on solid grades, volunteer efforts in their schools or community, and /or have a work history. Applicants are strongly encouraged to provide a sample of their work (i.e, slides, photographs, audio cassettes, CD's, video, etc).           Apr. 12, 2010 Berkshire County Arc Scholarship Scholarships are awarded to high schoool seniors with direct experience with individuals with disabilities who are pursing secondary education in the field of Human services. Selection of award winners will be based upon prior involvement in volunteer or paid activities with individuals with disabilities, potential contribution to the field and academic achievement.            Feb. 26, 2010 Mass Restaurant Assn. Education Foundation Scholarships up to $2000 to students continuing their careers in the restaurant/food service industry. Eligible students include high school seniors (ProStart or Non-ProStart), be accepted in an accredited restaurant/food service program, have minumum GPA of 2.65, verified culinary or restaurant/food service work experience. All seniors- minimum 250 hours of paid or volunteer experience. Applications may be obtained on-line at www.marestaurantassoc.org or in the Guidance Dept.            Apr. 1, 2010 Mass Broadcasters Assoc. Student Broadcaster Scholarship Program Seniors who will enroll in an accredited 2 or 4 college or vocational school offering degrees in radio and television broadcasting. The selection process for scholarships will take into account such factors as financial need, academic merit, community service, extra-curricular activities, and work  experience.             Mar. 19, 2010 Mark Bavis Leadership Foundation This scholarship is awarded on the basis of need. Serious consideration will be given to those students who have made efforts to make a difference in their communities and/or have shown leadership qualities within their school.           Mar. 1, 2010 2010 Student-View Scholarship To apply simply log on to www.student-view.com and complete a 15-20 minute application survey about colleges in your area. The scholarship will be awarded via a random drawing of all completed applications. The program offers $7000 worth of scholarships to high school seniors.           Apr. 22, 2010 Mass. Flower Grower's Assoc. The MFGA is sponsoring a scholarship of up to $4000 (depending on length of study) for students majoring in floriculture, horiculture, or related agricultural sciences.              Apr. 30, 2010 New England Patriots Write On Scholarship All New England students between the ages of 13 and 18 are eligible to enter. Students have a chance to win up to $10,000 through this program.Submit an essay between 750-1,000 words demonstrating your thoughts on the 2009 Patriots season. Submit a personal statement of no more than 500 words  explaining how this scholarship wiil benfit you as a student. Submit an essay of no more than 1,000 words about the importance of volunteerism and what it means to you.            Mar. 17, 2010 Price Chopper Golub Foundation 2010 Scholarship Award Eight different scholarships, students may only apply for one Price Chopper's Golub Foundation Scholarship. You do not have to work for Price Chopper to apply. Applicant must plan to attend an accredited two or four-year college or university in NY, MA, PA, VT, CT or NH. An original essay of no more than 1000 words should be included with the student educational history, activity profile and  3 letters of recommendation. The application form should be filled in online. Must submit a copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR)             Apr. 16, 2010 The Willem Willeke Memorial Scholarship Program Seniors who are students of violin, viola, or cello who are serious in their intent to pursue a professional career in music. Must submit a 300-500 word essay containing biographical material, reasons why she/he desires the award and how it will be used. An audio tape recording or a CD of good clear quality of the applicant’s recent playing.            Apr. 26,2010 Daniel Pearl Berkshire Scholarship Acceptance to an accredited college or university offering a course of study focused on journalism or music. Two letters of recommendation. A brief essay on what inspired your interest in journalism or music and in particular, How you believe you might be  able to change the world for the better.                   Apr. 16, 2010 Lola Greene Legacy Fund This Scholarship  was established in 2009 to honor the memory of outstanding Latin teacher Lola Greene. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating Latin scholar who exemplifies the characteristics that Lola valued- intelligence, achievement, generosity, and outstanding kindness.               Apr. 1, 2010 Berkshire Health Systems Kermit Gordon Scholarship   Any resident of Berkshire County  who intends to pursue one of the following fields of study Medical, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and other Health and Health Science related programs.                Apr. 12, 2010 Berkshire  Health Systems     Nursing Scholarship Any resident of Berkshire County who intends to pursue a Degree in Nursing Programs.                  Apr. 12, 2010 Order Sons of Italy in America ITAM Lodge #564 In order to qualify for this scholarship, the student or parent must have been a member of the ITAM Lodge or Junior Lodge for a minimum of 12 months prioe to the May 1 deadline.                   Apr. 12, 2010            Berkshire County Selectman’s Association Scholarship One senior is selected from the central region school district based on community service with particular consideration given to municipal service, financial need ,academic achievement, future educational plans and overall quality of application.Personal statement and transcript required.                Mar. 24, 2010 Rob Roy Academy Scholarship Graduates must have a sincere desire to enter the fields of Cosmetology and Barbering. Demonstrate motivation and academic achievement. Must have SAT scores of 1000 or more, be in the top 20% of the class and have a GPA of at least 3.0. Newton Memorial Scholarship Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation Applicants must be residents of Berkshire county and enrolled or planning to enroll in a two-year program at a community college, technical, vocational, or trade school. Two letters of recommendation, an essay which includes your educational and career goals, special interests, ambition, activities or community service.               Apr. 12, 2010 Elsie Frank Scholarship Greater Boston  PFLAG  (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians & Gays) offers ‘Elsie Frank Scholarships’ to seniors who will enroll in a two or four year college or tech/voc school in 2010. They will award $10,000 in scholarships. It is NOT based on your grades or your financial situation. All students are welcome to apply. Essay required, should be 500 words or less. PFLAG National Scholrships are also available.          Mar. 12, 2010 The Humane Society of the U.S. Shaw-Worth Memorial Scholarship No standardizied application. Applications should be written in letter form and should include a narrative of the student’s achievement in animal protection as well as a discussion of his or her attitude toward animals. Documentation of the activities cited, recommendations from at least 3 people and a description of future plans for humane work are required.               Apr. 30, 2010 Larry Briggs Memorial Scholarship Any student athlete graduating from a high school in the Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, and Hampshire Counties and accepted by an accredited four-year college.The student must have been a participating member of the varsity basketball program at his/her respective high school.  The basis for awarding the scholarship shall focus primarily on the applicant’s scholarship, character, leadership, and financial need. The Kohl’s scholarship program recognizes and rewards young volunteers (ages 6-18) who help make their communities a better palce to live. (AYF) Applicants must have received Key’s services for  at least three months and have performed successfully academically (either through completion of a high school diploma or GED).
